The Golden State Social Opportunities Program (GSSOP)

Grant Description:

The Golden State Social Opportunities Program (GSSOP) aims to increase the number of trained licensed behavioral health professionals providing direct care in California-based nonprofit organizations. In exchange for a 24-month service obligation practicing and providing direct care in a community-based organization, eligible applicants may receive up to $25,000 per year, for a total of up to $50,000.


Eligible Educational Programs: GSSOP applicants must be accepted or enrolled in an accredited graduate program that prepares them to become one of the following professions:

• Licensed Clinical Social Worker

• Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist

• Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor

• Licensed Clinical Psychology (PhD or PsyD)


Applicant Eligibility Requirements To be eligible for an GSSOP award, each applicant must:

• Be enrolled in a graduate program from a University of California or California State University campus or a nonprofit independent institution of higher education (as defined in subdivision (b) of Section 66010 of the Education Code).

• Start the training program by September 30, 2024.

• Be enrolled in a minimum of six (6) semester units, or its equivalent, until program completion.

• Have a GPA of 2.0 or greater for most recent academic performance or equivalent.

• Maintain a GPA of 2.0 or greater, until program completion.

• Graduate after the proposed grant agreement start date.

• Not have any other service obligations outside of BHSP or GSSOP.

• Not be in breach of any other HCAI service obligation.

• Commit to working in a community-based organization (CBO) for a period of two (2) years upon completion of the postgraduate program.

o Provide 32 hours or more per week of direct care upon graduating during service obligation.

o For purposes of this program, employment for an academic year in a school setting is equivalent to one (1) year.

• Commit to seeking licensure from an eligible educational program.

• Attend an educational institution within the state of California (online and/or in-person).

• Be physically present and reside in California while attending courses.

• Complete and submit the application through the HCAI Funding Portal by the deadline.
